Most people assume storefront signs are easy. In reality, they are anything but. The truth is, nothing about custom signage is simple—especially for a new business that’s still building out its space. When a preschool in Carlsbad called us, they had already secured their lease and had a design in mind. But between property guidelines, city permitting, and blocked wall access, they had more barriers than they expected. That’s why they turned to North Coast Signs.
We’re based in Vista, CA, and we serve businesses throughout Carlsbad and all of North County. We don’t just install signage. We make sure that every detail—from approval to inspection—is covered without compromise.
Every Step Had A Step Before It
This preschool was moving into a retail center and needed storefront signage that reflected its bright, welcoming brand. But before we could even begin fabrication, we had to get design approval from the property manager. The building required that all signage comply with specific visual criteria outlined in the lease, and those criteria weren’t flexible.
We worked directly with the center’s management to meet those requirements without sacrificing the school’s identity. Once the design was approved, we secured the necessary permits through the City of Carlsbad. Getting permits cleared is rarely fast, but we knew exactly what the city needed and moved quickly.
Vibrant Colors, Engineered For Wear
We fabricated one set of face-lit channel letters, each letter standing 12 inches tall. The faces were made from pigmented translucent vinyl—not standard overlay film—because we wanted the colors to stay vibrant for the long haul. We used Kumquat Orange, Golden Yellow, Brilliant Green, and Poppy Orange for maximum visibility and visual appeal.
The letters were trimmed in white to create crisp edges and contrast, which helped the sign stand out against the building’s neutral background. Every element was selected with intention—not just to meet specs, but to make a visual impact that lasts.
No Wall Access? No Problem.
When it came time to install the sign, we ran into a surprise. Interior improvements had already sealed off access to the back of the wall, which made it impossible to connect power from inside the suite. Some companies might have delayed the project or passed the issue back to the client. We didn’t.
Instead, we drilled through the exterior façade and installed a secure access panel. That allowed us to run the necessary wiring and connect the illumination without compromising the building or slowing the project timeline. Once the work was complete, we passed final inspection and lit the sign.
This Sign Didn’t Just Glow—It Changed Everything
The morning after installation, the preschool owner saw the sign fully illuminated for the first time. It was clear, clean, and visible from the street. A parent driving by stopped in and said, “We saw your sign last night and had to come check it out.” That’s the kind of visibility that creates opportunity.
For a preschool, trust begins before families even walk through the door. When your signage looks sharp, intentional, and professionally installed, it sends a message: this place is ready. This place cares.
Your Sign Is Not A Detail—It’s A Decision Point
If your signage doesn’t stand out, your business fades before it begins. Poor materials, weak lighting, or confusing design can cost you more than you think. Most businesses don’t realize how much they’ve missed until a customer says, “I didn’t even know you were here.”
At North Coast Signs, we make sure that doesn’t happen. We work with businesses in Carlsbad and beyond to design and install signage that’s not just visible—but memorable. Call North Coast Signs at (760) 536-5454 before your opening is lost behind a blank wall.
