One of our regular clients, H.G. Fenton, had a big project for us. They needed an updated monument sign, to bring better visibility for some of the tenants in the business park. This is the type of sign that needs to be designed, engineered and constructed carefully, as it plays an important role in navigation as well as withstanding the outdoor elements. We were excited to get started making a custom-designed monument sign for our client.
As you can see from the image, our custom monument sign for H.G. Fenton is highly-visible and makes a strong impression. Each business represented on the sign is clearly displayed, with their individual styles, yet harmoniously, creating an overall impression of quality.
H.G. Fenton aims to provide people with quality places to live and work throughout San Diego. They manage properties in great locations and maintain them with expertise to give back to the community. We were glad to help this firm achieve its aims, and work on this property located in Carlsbad, CA.
First, we took a look at the existing sign situation for H.G. Fenton. They wanted their old monument sign removed
as it did not have enough information, only featuring the address numbers and name of the park. The previous sign utilized cut vinyl for the lettering, but having dimensional lettering in acrylic has a far better life value. Our client wanted to promote its tenants, and the tenants wanted to bring in more customers for the retail establishments. The old monument sign did have a good concrete base, however, so when we demolished the original sign we kept that part. When our client approved our design proof, we went ahead with the permitting with the City of Carlsbad.
Part of our design and construction consultation also involves ensuring the sign is built to city standards and environmental needs. The permit process also entailed updating the Comprehen-sive Sign Program (“CSP”) for the business park, as the sign allowances had increased since the beginning of the business park over a decade ago. Once that CSP was approved, then we could submit the monument plans to the Planning, Building, and Traffic & Engineering Departments for review and approval. The process took about 30 days, but well worth the wait! Once the permit was acquired, production could begin on building non-illuminated monument sign.
At 66 inches high by 120 inches wide and 12 inches deep, the sign is large enough to draw interest. Its exterior is eye-catching, with double-sided 090 aluminum panel construction. The main business park information stands out as a heading, constructed with 3/8” thick black acrylic lettering. The tenant panels are made with exterior grade material to withstand the elements and promote easy change-outs. Four panels are available on each side of the sign, constructed from custom vinyl prints, six-inch high flat cut black acrylic lettering from 3/8” material, and mounted to the main sign cabinet with VHB tape. This makes for simple tenant changes, when the time arises. Overall, the sign accomplishes the goal of the landlord, and satisfies the tenants with added visibility to their business establishments. It looks great and will last for a long time.
