One smart way to save money on a sign project is to work with what you have. For example, if parts of your existing sign are in good repair and work well with your final vision, in many cases they can be reused. Sometimes it’s better to upgrade your signage without having to start completely new. Our client, Gildred Development did exactly this, securing our services to do a monument retrofit. So, we accepted the challenge to upgrade the existing monument sign at this Carlsbad business park.
Gildred Development manages properties and business parks throughout Southern California. They provide competitive advantages to businesses and make a difference in communities. And updating this monument would reflect just that.
At this local business park in Carlsbad, the existing monument sign was outdated and in need of refreshment. The arched top dated the property, and so we mapped out the plan to update. Partnering with a local concrete cutting company, the top arch was cut off, as it was solid concrete. The bottom part of the structure was intact, so we could use it add the new updated top for a monument retrofit transformation.
To top off this beautiful project, for instance, we installed a modern new brushed aluminum top shelf, as well as dimensional lettering in the same material. Next, the address numbers were bottom mounted to the panel, made from 1” thick acrylic painted metallic silver. This resulted in a dramatic change that looked amazing.
Once the top was leveled off, we got to work on the monument retrofit base. We worked to repair and refinish the stucco, and repainted the sign on both sides. Next, the work on the tenant panels, lettering, and address numbers. Then the existing glass tenant panels were removed. New panels sized larger gave the tenants better visibility. These panels were 1/4” thick glass tempered, with custom cut vinyl lettering for the tenant names. Then, we reused the existing stand-offs to add to our client’s savings. The end result is a monument retrofit sign that looks brand-new, updated, and modern, without breaking the bank.
To do all of this work we began with acquiring approvals from the Carlsbad HOA for the necessary sign permit from the City of Carlsbad. We secured all of these by preparing the appropriate documents, completing the application, and filing it. In the case of the HOA, we built in time for the 30-day review into our project timeline, to ensure we could keep moving forward without needless delays. We offer these services to all of our clients, only charging the actual cost of any added fees for permitting.
As a result, our client’s sign looks wonderful, and they were happy with the results of this monument retrofit.
